New Madrid was the first American town in Missouri. It
was founded in 1789 . . . practically destroyed by earth-
quake 1811-12 . . . A Catholic Church was founded 1789.
A Methodist Church in 1810 . . . It was a very strategic
position during the "Bootheel" campaign of the Civil War
. . . nearby is the Island No. 10 location and the Belmont
Battlefield famous in the Civil War History. This city was
captured by the Union forces in 1862
