The wonderful Spanish Colonial Revival-style La Plaza shopping center opened
in 1936, designed by Harry Williams, the father of renowed Palm Springs Desert
Modern architect E. Stewart Williams.
Current research by architectural historian Alan Hess indicates that La
Plaza, with its broad mix of retail stores, was perhaps the first true automobile-
oriented shopping center in California.
